Proposition

“So, I was thinking.”

Toxicon turned to look at Power Shift.  It was after one of Toxicon’s missions for UNITY, and Power Shift held his own against most of VIPER.  A few times he seemed to cut it close, however, and Toxicon thought he was going to go down.

Not on my watch, Toxicon had thought fiercely.  By the sheer power of his will, or by Kelvin’s, he survived.

“You were thinking?” Toxicon asked.

Power Shift spoke, his voice carrying a touch of the electronic hum that he had when he spoke through the mike in the helmet.  “I need to move out of my house.”

“Where are you thinking of going?”

“North side of town.  I saw a couple of places.  But – but I can’t afford them.  Not on my own.”

Toxicon knew where this was going.  “Kelvin,” he said, “I destroyed the last person who lived with me.”

“You can’t destroy me.”  He knew Kelvin was smiling from the tone of his voice.  “I have an angel to protect me.”

“Can he be with you all the time, whenever you’re there?  Can he heal you constantly because of my exposure?”

“Yes, I would like that; and yes, I bet he can.  He helped to heal my wounds.”

Toxicon wondered how Kelvin got back on his feet so fast.   “So you’re still seeing him?”

“When I can.  But if I finally have my own place, my dad can’t tell me what to do.”

“What about the furniture?  And everything else?  The food?”

“Maybe Scott or Grim can come over and do some magic to make the stuff tougher, like they did at their house for you.”

Toxicon looked away from Kelvin, even though he couldn’t see his face.  “Why me?  You know what I can do.”

Kelvin reached out a gloved hand and touched Toxicon’s sleeved arm.  “I”m not asking you to marry me.  I’m asking you to be a roommate.  Will you think about it?  Please?”

“Why not Starcrowe?  Or Aries?”

“Starcrowe’s a jerk.  Aries would want to screw me, then Fallen would get upset, and there’ll be lightning all over the place.”

Toxicon sighed.  “I’ll think about it, okay?”

“Okay.  I’m going to go to the club and meet Fallen there.  I’ll see you around?”

He nodded.  Toxicon sighed again.  “History repeats,” he whispered.  “It always does.”
