Losing His Religion

Mike waited, like he usually did, in Caprice, and in the base, and at the library.

He waited for a call, a visit, anything.  He dowsed and used spells to try and find Mikael.  All to no avail.

He had the dull ache in his heart, the same one that Stefan gave him, such a long time ago, when he left to work in heaven, leaving Mike behind.  Well, he wasn’t going to carry the torch for anyone anymore.

The ache in his heart turned to rage at being abandoned once again, which he tried to dampen down around Scott.   He decided to put Mikael out of his mind once and for all.

He was in the library, trying to write out a spell without gods, when there was a knock.

He looked up.  Only the kids knocked.  With a wave of his hand, he dismissed the wards, and said, “Come in.”

The door opened, and a white-haired man stood there, the man Mike knew as Kelvin’s fallen angel boyfriend.  Mike closed the book.  “I still haven’t found out your name,” he said.  “I’ve had other things to deal with.”

“As have I,” he said, coming down the stairs.  “The boy, how does he fare?”

“They had to do a skin graft, but otherwise he’s fine.  He’s home recuperating now.”

The fallen angel nodded, and stood in front of Mike.  “What ails you?”

“Ails?” He snorted.  “The fact that I lost most of my power and abilities because I can’t invoke the gods.”

“What gods?  There is only One.”

Mike blinked.  No, there was more than one.  There was an infinity of gods.  There were more gods than the Greco-Romans.  There were Celtic, and Russian, and Chinese, and, of course, the Christian God and saints.  There were also, of course, religions based on a person’s will, and religions based on science…”You’re right.  My God, you’re right.”

Fallen smiled, believing he had turned a heathen soul to the True Faith.  “Of course I am right, for it is the truth.”

Mike put aside the book and said, “I’m going to make some tea.  Tell me all you know about God.”
