Backstory: Reckoning (1)

He powered the big boy on and felt like Dr. Frankenstein.

The red and white man-sized robot hummed.  Timothy Grange wheeled back away from the bot.  He grinned at his brother Nico.  “Where’s the joystick?”

Nico handed Grange the Atari-style joystick, and reached for the glasses that connected to it before they fell on the floor.  He placed them on Timothy’s face while Timothy moved his shoulders and arm to curl his hand around the joystick.   He used a finger to press the red button, and the robot stood up straight.

“Cool!” cried Timothy.  He jerked the joystick forward, and it took one step.  “We did it!”

“You did it,” said Nico.  “I only put the pieces where you told me.”

“Somebody did it,” said Timothy, getting the man to move two more steps.  Timothy touched a button on the glasses, and he could see through the machine’s eyes.  He swiveled the joystick, and the machine turned, first its head, then its torso, then its hips.  “Might as well be us.”

“What’re you going to do with it, Tim?”

“There’s somebody that needs a bit of fear put into him…”
