The best explanation of the story is here. Basically, Minerva went to visit the Muses. It doesn’t say why, however this visitation is explaining why she’s the patroness of the arts. Dante invokes her at the beginning of the Divine Comedy.
Personally, Minerva – or Athene – is my favorite of the goddesses. Calliope (epic poetry) is the one I usually name, though I think Melpomene (tragedy) is more influential to me.
