Initially I had him as a guy who liked westerns. But how was I going to explain his ability to reload? I took a page from ZAP’s story of Falcon, and had the pistols be an entity in and of itself – they always reload with whatever bullets are necessary, defaulting to the most destructive type of bullets (armor-piercing hollow-points).
