——————————————

It had no name other than what the creator gave it, like a sound that it would hear in the distance.  “Kaw, Kaw!”

It did not understand things that others jabbered at it.  One stabbed it through with something sharp.  It felt no pain, just felt that stabbing feeling; when it pulled its hand away it could see its lifeblood, like liquid diamonds, on its hand.  It pressed its hand against the wound, healing it, while looking at what was before it.

It could not see details, such as hair and eye color, or even the shape of the person’s face, or whether it was male or female.  Its eyes showed them as pillars of light, reflecting their life force.  It could use that, drain them, apply that to itself and have its own life force double.  It could tell whether the type of person they were – it could see auras instead of people.

This person was white, brown and black, with touches of blue woven throughout.  After four hits, the light faded away.

It could see things clearly in mirrors, however, or through frosted glass.  It watched animals, always fighting.  The taller, bigger types would fight and win.  It knew it was taller than an animal.   This is what it could do, fight.

So, it did.  A mage tried to erase the mark of its creator but Kadmus would not let her get that close.  It killed her also.  The creator had said other mages could be hurtful to it, so it was better to destroy them upon seeing them.

Luckily, where it was, in the Eastern part of the Nerva Archipelago, not many mages – or people – came there.  It would forever be surrounded by the cawing of ravens.

Until one day when it thought it heard its creator’s voice…
