The Spiral

A monkey was easy to carry, as Casey transferred him to one arm and opened the door with his other hand. He carried him over to the couch. Eeep whimpered, grabbing a hold of Casey’s arm.

Casey sighed, “It wouldn’t be the first time I slept in my clothes.” He turned down the bed and kicked off his boots. He lay down, the monkey still holding onto his arm. He tucked blankets around him, to give him a sense of security. He slowly pulled his arm free, feeling like someone trying to get away from an ugly bed partner.

Casey looked at the monkey, thinking this was not the first time he’d slept with an animal – though never in that way. He remembered Teapot, his cavalry mount; and Mikwaka, Red Bear, his first horse that he rode when he was with Chris Donovan…

Donovan hadn’t come back. He’d been bitchy lately. Hopefully he was taking it out on some poor, unsuspecting twit somewhere.

Speaking of twits, Benny was finally gone. Maybe. Was it bad of him to want to jump for joy? But right now wasn’t the right time. He had to bide his time, and wait. Maybe Cedric wouldn’t want him in that way anyway, just as a sex toy. Maybe he would fall in love with someone else, such as Kieran, or Dom…and he would be forever relegated to a “friend with benefits.”

He found himself staring at Esau’s kachina. Was it selfish to want more? Was it selfish to know that a person loved you, as much as you loved him?

He looked away from the kachina. There, it was said, admitted to the spirits. Yes, he loved him, would do anything for him, would protect him…but not enough to give up his Heart. He could commit; he’d done it before, often times. And these other men – Alex the mage, Dom, Alex in VHA, Viarsin – they meant nothing. Esau…he was different. Different, but not equal.

Eeep whimpered from the bed. Casey stripped down to his boxers and found another blanket. He lay in the bed next to Eeep, sleeping back to back. Eeep calmed, and snored, very quietly. Casey recited his prayer that he had nearly every night, closed his eyes and drifted off to sleep.

In the morning, the damn monkey had taken all the covers.
